New York artist Marjorie Weiss creates paintings that are both fanciful and enigmatic. She began her career with a series of large family portraits painted from old photographs that were first shown at the Hampshire College Gallery in Amherst, Massachusetts where she was then living. Upon returning to her native New York, she continued to paint and exhibit her work in galleries throughout the United States and has had two solo exhibitions in Germany. Her paintings have evolved over the years from the “photo-realist” style of the early family portraits into the bolder, more graphic style found in the “Chestertown” paintings. In this series of paintings that were inspired by an old advertising postcard, her first black dog was introduced (Black Dog in Chestertown) and became a permanent part of the “Chestertown” landscape. The shadowy, silhouetted figures that appear in these paintings come together with the feeling of memory and reminiscence that is an intrinsic part of her work. Together, they create a sense of mystery and enigma that make these paintings captivating works of art.

Marjorie Weiss lives in downtown Manhattan with her husband and son.
